Are You Eligible? Check These Criteria First
Before you even log onto the official website, make sure you tick all the boxes. The police department is very strict when it comes to eligibility.
1. Educational Qualification
You must have a 12th-pass certificate from a government-approved board.
- Driver Posts: For the Police Constable Driver post, an additional mandatory requirement is a valid driving license for Light Motor Vehicles (LMV).
- Language: You must know how to write, read, and speak Marathi. This is compulsory for postings in Maharashtra.
2. Age Limits
The age criteria vary slightly according to the post and the category you are in.
| Post | General Category | Reserved Categories (SC/ST/OBC, etc.) |
| Police Constable | 18 to 28 Years | 18 to 33 Years |
| Constable Driver | 19 to 28 Years | 19 to 33 Years |
Relaxation Notes: SC/ST applicants receive a 5-year age relaxation, and the OBC group is entitled to a 3-year age relaxation in the upper age limit.
3. Physical Requirements (PMT)
If you fail to meet the following height and chest standards, your application will face disqualification.
| Category | Height (Minimum) | Chest (Male Only) |
| Male Candidates | 165 cm | 79 cm (Unexpanded), 84 cm (Expanded) |
| Female Candidates | 155 cm | Not Applicable |
The Selection Process: Two Big Hurdles
Forget about complicated exams first. The Pune Police recruitment process starts with the groundwork.
Phase 1: The Physical Test (PET/PMT)
The first of them is the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Measurement Test (PMT). To be eligible for the next round, you must be physically fit and of the required height/chest measurement.
- For Men: Running races, long jump, and other physical tasks, carrying specific marks.
Only individuals who score the minimum marks in the Physical Test and fulfill the standards in measurement (PMT) will be permitted to take the Written Examination.
Phase 2: The Written Examination
Pass the physicals, and you move to the Written Test round. It is usually a multiple-choice (OMR-based) test involving GK, current affairs, Marathi grammar, intellect, and arithmetic. Once this exam is done, your physical test performance will be used to rank you on the final merit list and select you for the job.
Pay, Perks, and The Respect of the Uniform
Government jobs in India are more than just a salary; it’s a matter of immense pride and responsibility. However, let’s talk about money.
The pay is structured under a competitive government scale. While the full Pay Scale is quite wide (INR 40,800 to 1,42,400 per month), your starting salary as a Constable or Jail Constable will fall at the initial entry level of this scale, plus all applicable government allowances (DA, HRA, etc.). This makes it a very respectable and secure starting salary. It’s a stable career with steady increments and excellent benefits, including medical facilities and a secure pension plan down the line.
